My thoughts on house training

House training your lgd

Not long after our move to Seguin our male Dufus took on a pack of coyotes. He wasn't severely injured, but did have a couple of bites that needed to be treated. Dufus came to us as a young adult that hadn't been house trained. Treating his wounds and healing took longer because he still doesn't like to come in the house.

Have you ever been hurt or sick and had to stay in the hospital? Its uncomfortable and hard to sleep, usually too cold. You dont feel good and just want to be "home".

Now imagine that you are an lgd, a dog that has spent its life outside protecting your flock or herd and some predator decided to fight. You are injured in the fight. You hurt and now you are being drugged to go to the vet and forced to stay inside a house, confined till your injuries heal. At best you are given a quiet place to rest, but you arent comfortable and everything is new and strange. You just want to be "home".

Now change that image up. You are an lgd that was raised through puppy hood at the very least coming in and out of the house, even if you do spend a good portion of time outside. The noises in the house are familiar and your owner has allowed you time and training to be comfortable in the house. You get injured and are brought in to recover. You arent stressed because you are "home". You are able to rest comfortably and able to heal. Without it being traumatic.

Which scenario would you prefer?

Lgds perform an important and sometimes dangerous job, dont we owe them the best possible care and training? Dont we owe them the ability to be as comfortable as possible in the worst of circumstances?

Even if you cant have them inside all the time at least take the time to train them and let them learn that being inside is a safe place.
