Picking an LGD:
There are several things to consider when on the search for the perfect lgd for your farm/homestead.
1: What do I need guarded?
2: How much territory needs to be guarded?
3: What kind of predators are in the territory?
4: Does the breeder have a similar set up, animals, and predators?
5: Does the breeder handle their pups or are the pups left to their own devices?
6: What level of veterinary care does the breeder provide pups?
7: Does the breeder provide lifetime training assistance?
8: Does the breeder have trained, proven guarding adult lgds?
In answering these questions you should be able to define your goals for your future lgd. If you have poultry then your goal is a poultry safe guardian. Amount of territory and predator load will tell you whether you will need more than one lgd in the future. A breeder with similar animals and proven adults will give your pup a head start on training. Pups left to their own devices with minimal handling/training will be more difficult to train once you get them. They have not had to listen to that point and will not want to start.
Getting a pup that is not vaccinated or partially vaccinated will set you up for the possiblity of parvo or other illnesses.
Finally a reputable breeder will want their pups set up for the best success possible. They will make sure that they are available if you have questions or need assistance.
It does not matter which breed of lgd you decide, but breeding for intelligence, trainability, and guarding instincts is vital. A cheap poorly bred dog will give you more issues and cost you more in the long run.
